Clarence Brown est un réalisateur, producteur, monteur, acteur et scénariste américain né le 10 mai 1890 à Clinton, Massachusetts (États-Unis), décédé le 17 août 1987 à Santa Monica (USA). Clarence Brown se rend à New York où il sera, de 1915 à 1920, l'assistant et le monteur de Maurice Tourneur, dont il dira plus tard : "c'était mon dieu, je lui dois tout. "
Après avoir collaboré à The country fair (Edmund Mortimer, 1920), il signe son premier film en 1920. Clarence Brown fut un des plus prestigieux réalisateurs de la Metro Goldwyn Mayer pour laquelle il réalisa presque tous ses films dont six furent sélectionnés pour les Oscars. Il fut souvent considéré comme un cinéaste de femmes, essentiellement romantique. Mais Rudolf Valentino, Clark Gable (sept fois), Spencer Tracy ou Gregory Peck furent aussi ses interprètes; et il sut brosser, avec vigueur, des tableaux aux couleurs de l'Amérique profonde
Clarence Brown s'est retiré du cinéma et est revenu à l'automobile. Il est mort le 17 août 1987 à Santa Monica (U.S.A.).
